This is the most well known form of yoga, also known as the yoga of physical poses. The word hatha come from "ha" and "tha" meaning sun and moon in sanskrit. Hatha yoga purifies the nervous system and strengthens the body. Two most renowned texts of this type of yoga are the Hatha-Yoga-Pradipika and the Gheranda-Samhita.

Hatha-Yoga is a branch of Yoga which requires the aspirant to contribute huge amount of time on physical processes or asanas and pranayama (breathing exercises). Hatha-Yoga teaches the yogin to attain a state of freedom. This is a means of physical purification which enables the body to be fit and gives the ability to perform higher stages of meditation. The Hatha-Yoga also claims that its adherents can attain great siddhis. Hatha-Yoga can certainly bring a person to enlightenment, but its demands are suitable for those who are ready to commit themselves fully to severe discipline.

Together with pranayama and meditation it attempts to bring spritual elements of mind into the body to achieve perfect health. That is, it concentrates mostly on the third (asanas) and fourth (pranayama)step on the eight limbs of yoga.

  • Asanas(postures) are physical body postures which increases bodies flexibility and vitality, which also helps in fighting diseases. Asanain sanskrit means "sitting position" or when related to yoga as in yogaasans means various "body positions".   • Pranayamais a technique or science of breath control. It is derived from the words "prana" meaning life force and "ayama" means to lenghten or to extend. Prana is a subtle invisible force inside the body. This force is the link between the body and the mind. So it is believed that by controlling breath one can control his mind. Pranayama can help manage and prevent and bronchitis asthma.It makes you flexible and strengthens your abs, back, neck and your legs.
